This series came about after I painted a watercolor of Native American blankets on shelves in a ropero, located in New Mexico. I continued this idea several years later, painting objects on shelves with the recurring theme of vessels. These vessels are usually part of an interior setting, hinting at a domestic realm. I have several names for these paintings, but most are named after the song “Ain’t Misbehavin’” which I first heard sung by Fats Waller. Written in 1929, it has become a jazz standard. For this series, I simplified the lyrics to “Ain’t misbehavin’, just sittin’ on the shelf, savin’ all my love for you.”
